On Tuesday, Twitter users on the left had discussions about Bill Maher. Some users claimed that Maher held right-wing views and made racist comments towards minorities, as well as criticizing his perceived arrogance. The discussions were prompted by CNN’s announcement that Maher’s post-show segment, “Overtime,” will air on Fridays during “CNN Tonight.”
Cenk Uygur, host of “The Young Turks,” stated that Maher was a right-wing culture warrior. Mehdi Hasan, host of MSNBC, referred to Maher as a racist and discussed cancel culture. Hasan stated that while public figures are being cancelled, “right-wing, reactionary white men who shout the loudest about it almost always seem to do fine themselves.” Keith Olbermann, formerly of MSNBC, tweeted that Maher’s new deal with CNN was like him giving his “leftovers” to the network. Nikole Hannah-Jones, founder of “The 1619 Project,” challenged Maher’s statement about the project on Twitter. Maher had argued that the project’s teachings were wrong, to which Hannah-Jones replied that the last chapter of the project discusses how the US can be redeemed.
